Welcome to Israel

by Elma Schemenauer

Book review

This non-fiction book welcomes you to Israel. It is a factual piece getting right down to every fact there is to know about this place; where it is located, its landscape features, the plants and animals residing there, the history, Israel today, its people, jobs, schools, language, food, even the favorite pastimes of the people there. Israel is a place unfamiliar to many, and this book gives wonderful facts about the land and everything in it.

I would use this book to talk about cultural vocabulary. This book is about Israel, a place that many of my students will not know about unless they are from that culture and much of the vocabulary used will be unfamiliar. This is normal, as students will always run into words that they do not know the meaning of. This book can be used to practice using context clues to distinguish the meaning of the word, and a glossary is provided to help the students if they cannot figure out the meaning.
